SFA-8 Shape Study (4)

The Faculty of Architecture / Architectural Conservation and Restoration
2nd Year, sem 2, 2024-2025 | Compulsory Course | Hours/Week: 2L | ECTS Credits: 2
Fișa disciplinei:
FA-C SFA-8 Studiul formei (4).pdf
Department:
Study of Form and Ambience
Course Leader:
Matei Dumitrescu
Learning outcomes:
The course has the following didactic objects:
-working with materials specific to the field of architectural restoration, mastering the techniques
of replication, transposition, remodeling and multiplication of the object to be restored.
-correct use of tools and materials, recognition of work stages depending on on the particular defects of the object to be restored.
Content:
The topic of the Study of Form workshop for the Architectural Restoration and Conservation department - Sibiu is structured in 5 chapters associated with consecutive stages, from creation to transposition and finally restoration of a figurative bas-relief at scale 1/1.

Stage 1: Obtaining the surface to model, understanding the geometric structure based on the given composition, proportional reproduction of elements, obtaining the shape of the outline in the vertical-horizontal plane, creating volume in the depth plane. Finally, obtaining the apparent texture of the material in accordance with the object to be reproduced will be practiced.

Stage 2: Obtaining the negative part of the object made in the first stage, as well as the following successive stages, will take place using another material specific to the field of restoration, modeling plaster.
Description of material properties, spatial procedures, work safety, adjacent materials and work tools will be made. We will proceed with the preparation of the material, the copying of the modeled form, copying the modeled shape, extracting the modeling material from the copy part, cleaning the obtained part.

Stage 3: Preparing the piece for casting. The copy surface of the negative piece is chiseled and isolated. The piece of metal and textile reinforcement is modeled and pre-assembled in the piece of the negative.

Stage 4: We proceed to casting and obtaining the positive piece of plaster in the negative one.The copy layer will be poured, the reinforcement will be attached, the final plaster layer will be poured. The object transposed from clay to plaster will be obtained after breaking (carving) the piece of the negative.

Stage 5: Introducing the student to the restoration techniques of a plaster sculpture: in order to obtain the object to be restored, the work object resulting from the previous work stages will be destroyed by breaking.

The activity of the restoration stage consists of: recovering the modeling fragments detached from the assembly, resulting from the break; preparing the parts for reassembly. The reassembly is done using plaster in which dye is added to differentiate the restored surfaces from the original one.
Teaching Method:
Practical and theoretical presentations, followed by the realization of a practical work, done in the workshop, under guidance.
Assessment:
The arithmetic mean of the 5 work stages, with two decimal places.
