Department:
Interior Design and Design
Course Leader:
asist.dr.dsg. Bogdan-Mihai Ioniță
Learning outcomes:
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to initiate and develop a research-based project in the field of product design, grounded in theoretical knowledge and critical analysis. They will understand the importance of structured documentation in identifying relevant and contemporary design challenges, and will be able to define feasible directions for a diploma project. The student will gain the ability to synthesize information, build coherent design strategies, and apply research findings to support a personal and professionally grounded concept.
Content:
This applied course is structured around key stages: defining and justifying a general design domain, conducting contextual research (trends, user needs, product typologies), analyzing relevant industry examples, and narrowing down the topic into three subdomain proposals. The process emphasizes the creation of documentation sheets, visual and comparative product analysis, and identifying a design direction with real-world potential. The selected subdomain will serve as the foundation for the diploma project in the next academic phase.
Teaching Method:
The course employs a combination of theoretical lectures, panel presentations, one-on-one feedback sessions, and guided project development. Throughout the semester, students will produce research files, build visual analyses, and create exploratory mock-ups or 3D models. Ongoing mentorship and feedback ensure critical thinking, personal initiative, and coherence in the research and design process.
Assessment:
Evaluation is based on an oral presentation supported by a digital PDF portfolio that reflects the student’s full research process.
